The Pros and Cons of an Online Dating Service

With this being a blog for an online dating service it’s hard to believe that we would write anything remotely resembling a con about internet dating, but we are going to be objective. There may be a few reasons why someone would not want to try this convenient and much more sensible way of meeting someone who might be of interest as a romantic partner.

Online dating is something that you do in the comfort of your own home, not a trip out to a bar or nightclub to meet someone randomly. That is considered a step up for most people but there are some who prefer the face to face social interaction that takes place in the clubs. There are also those who need a few drinks to feel comfortable talking to the opposite sex. You could do that at home, but where’s the fun in that?

Another drawback to online dating is the inability to be deceptive when you’re getting to know someone. This is a positive to most of the dating pool but some may prefer to be able to lie about what they’re all about. You can do this in a quick social situation. You can’t do it when you’re chatting, emailing and using your web-cam to spend time getting to know someone. Eventually the truth comes out.

That whole privacy thing is definitely a positive, except of course for those stalkers out there who write down license plate numbers and follow people home. You can’t do that with online dating. Privacy provisions have been put in place to ensure that your experience is safe and drama free. As a matter of fact, you can control the level of information your dating prospect is allowed to see until you’re ready to release it.

Ownership of a computer is necessary for online dating and that could be considered a drawback, but obviously you have access to one or you wouldn’t be reading this post. Internet access is needed and can be found at coffee shops and public libraries for free around the world. Photos for your profile can be done with any digital camera. Everyone has a friend who owns one. Can you think of anything else? There might be cons to using internet dating, but not for those actually looking for a date.
